BARRY KIMBER JOINS FAT LEMON
1 May 2018

Barry Kimber - once part of the duo Albert - has joined the roster at Fat Lemon. And to mark the occasion, DAVID caught up with the director and discovered him to be an extremely affable character. He's clearly in possession of exactly the right temperament to fit in at Jane Bolton and Cabell Hopkins's lovely company.

Barry Kimber reveals that his career as a director was fairly inadvertent. After leaving Edinburgh where he grew up, he crossed Scotland and secured a Media Studies degree in Glasgow. Once he'd graduated, he felt sure he possessed all the tools to become a producer and that was very much his aim. But when he secured a job at the BBC, he discovered the role was much more creative than he'd imagined and - before he knew where he was - he became a director.

He was better suited to directing than he could have anticipated and, before long, his on air promos for the BBC began picking up Promax awards.

He decided to form a directing partnership with his friend Andy Poyiadgi and together they became 'Albert'. It was a fruitful relationship... over the twelve years they worked together, they directed a large number of films including a lot of TVCs. But perhaps the greatest testament to their success lies in the revelation that they remained good friends throughout their professional relationship, and remain so today.

Although there was no formal delineation of duties, he and Poyiadgi had different strengths with Kimber initially concentrating on performance while his partner took care of the visual aspect.

I enjoyed showing his work to agencies - it always got a good laugh.

 ”

They learned from one another and by the time they decided to go their separate ways, Kimber was aware they were both more than capable of making their own mark.

And so it has proved, Kimber's recent commercial for 'We Buy Any House' is the latest demonstration of his skills, and you can tell he had a lot of fun with the script's doomsday scenario.

Speaking to him, you can tell how pleased he is to be working with Fat Lemon and from what Jane Bolton says about him, it's mutual: "We are thrilled to welcome Barry to Fat Lemon. What a nice guy. A real creative talent, who has a brilliant blend of truly funny. great storytelling and a distinctive look. Impressive. We look forward to really having fun with Barry and of course making great work"

Fat Lemon's head of new business, Rudy Downey worked with Kimber when he was half of Albert and she says: "I'm thrilled to have Barry back in my everyday work life, he's one of my favourites of the people I've come across in the (*clears throat) fifteen years I've been doing this job.

"I enjoyed showing his work to agencies - it always got a good laugh."
