JAKE MAVITY'S SHORT CALICO SET FOR UK RELEASE

A few months ago, DAVID editor Jason Stone was invited to conduct a Q&A after a screening of Jake Mavity's short film 'Calico'. As is often the way, there hadn't been an opportunity to watch the film ahead of the event itself, so - along with most of the rest of the audience - your correspondent was watching it for the first time.

As hoped, the film is fantastic. With a perfect balance of humour and poignancy, Mavity explores the sense of otherness felt by someone with vitiligo - a skin condition which can be unavoidably visible.

Young actor Malaysia Newland, who herself has vitiligo, displays remarkable acting precociousness for a novice... a tribute to Mavity's skills as a director, and his determination to tell this story with both authenticity and a light touch.


'Calico' is currently doing the festival circuit and, to avoid breaking eligibility criteria, we cannot bring you the whole film at the moment, but the trailer gives a sense of it, and producer Sarah Mavity tells us that its UK release is incoming.

Watch it when you can... it's a cracking short film.
