Many games turn players into warfighters, but few turn them into war photographers. Umurangi Generation gives players a camera instead of a gun and plonks them in the middle of an alien invasion, Kiwi-style.
The game is set in near-future Tauranga, New Zealand, where residents share the locked-down streets with armed UN 'peacekeepers' and the corpses of extraterrestrial jellyfish. Your job is to capture both the beauty and brutality of the situation (and deliver parcels within the time limit).
What's most striking about Umurangi Generation, apart from its low-poly art style and raft of camera attachments, is its environmental storytelling. Developer Naphtali Faulkner packs each level with signs of unrest, disorder, and tragedy, but also joy—you just need to look in the right places.
Above all else, Faulkner wants players to express themselves, whether it's by photographing an injured soldier on a train or a penguin next to a breakdancing competition. For once, everyone you see in a first-person game is subject matter, not cannon fodder.
