In Search of Yang
Over the years, Alan Watts has been used to sell cars, iced tea, and cruise lines. Now the late philosopher's become an honorary member of Yin Yin, the Dutch band that skips between funk, psychedelia, and other genres at the drop of a hat. The only lyrics in 'In Search of Yang' are spoken by Watts, like, "There is no yang without yin, no yin without yang." In the promo directed by Sharif Abdel Mawla, Sam Spruell (Munch in 'Fargo' and Maekar Targaryen in 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms') plays a man desperate for that to be true. Since Watts died in 1973, all the guy can do is carry out his own unorthodox inquiries. You sense he's trapped in a time loop, where every day starts in a dumpster and the threat of arrest or an existential kick in the balls looms large. It's only when he meets a woman (Erza Sejdiu) who moves to the same funky beat that harmony seems possible at last. The way Spruell and Sejdiu dance inside the Grand Hotel in Pristina, Kosovo is nutty but profound, as the universe starts to make sense in a hotel on life support.
