"Bystander"

21 July 2026

3 mins 50s

A problem shared.

Shown at the UN's Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in February, 'Bystander' explores the phenomenon of the hesitant male. He can be a colleague, a pubgoer, a gamer, a man at the bus stop—take your pick. What matters most is that he struggles to intervene when women are harassed, threatened, or demeaned.

The cast know what they've seen and heard, but what happens if they speak up? One guy suspects he’ll be sacked, while another thinks he'll make the situation a whole lot worse. As the abuse persists, however, they ask themselves "Is no one seeing this?" and "Why isn't anybody doing anything?" It's a steady, intense build-up that also tells a story through physical gestures that convey inner turmoil (clenched fists, hand clasped around a pint glass, et cetera).

Mindful that many people have boarded buses and trains, only to worry about the ordeal they've left someone to, the advertised charity presents its own sliding doors moment that shows what an active bystander looks and sounds like. Silence, it says, guarantees a lack of progress, but an internal voice made external could help turn the tide across the country.
