Choc and awe.
As World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) continues to fritter away goodwill at a rate of knots, Tony's Chocolonely offers disgruntled fans a welcome alternative. Directed by MarySue Masson, this rollicking ad takes the brand’s fight against child labour and deforestation and turns it into, as legendary commentator Jim Ross would put it, a slobberknocker. The main event is your classic face/heel match-up: Tony versus X-Ploitation (played by real-life UK wrestlers Tommy Tanner and Ben Pumffrey). Built like brick shithouses and dressed like they've stumbled out of a WWF/WCW/ECW costume department in the 1990s, they throw down like there's a title belt on the line—Masson, like a true manager ensures both wrestlers sell each beat. Yet the arena's no seventy-thousand-seater stadium—instead, it's a flat where two women share a bar of the advertised chocolate. This purchase not only helps Tony the brand and Tony the beefcake gain the upper hand, but also treats us to dialogue like, "I do like a tasty chunk." Power, pleasure, and positivity in one 40" package.
