Oh, balls!
It is, to some extent, a cliché that men are incredibly lax when it comes to safeguarding their own health. It's a theme that runs through mental health campaigns, but it's a tendency that becomes really dangerous when it comes to ensuring men make time to visit a doctor if they identify something indicating the possibility of a serious illness. A number of different approaches have been adopted to address this problem but none better or funnier than this supreme New Zealand film highlighting the need for men to inspect their own testicles. The idea here is that men respond to banter. So, by setting out the idea that they need an ulterior motive to carry out this simple health check and, importantly, to do something about it if they happen to discover something untoward, Testicular Cancer NZ say they will hand over a brand-new utility vehicle to men who report finding an unexpected lump lurking within their budgie smugglers. The real prize for the men will of course be timely treatment, something that will prove considerably more valuable than the car that theoretically waits for them. Director Alex Roberts coaxes a super performance from former All Black rugby hero Buck Sheldon - an appropriate choice as he was once tackled so violently by the French that his scrotum was ripped open leaving one of his testicles hanging free - and the whole thing adds up to that rarest of rare things... an awareness campaign that will raise the public's awareness rather than that of award juries.
