The fire rises.
Carla Juri (Ana Stelline in 'Blade Runner 2049') stars in Florine and Kim Nüesch's feminist manifesto '(Un)Becoming'. The sisters and directors from St Gallen say it took over a year to develop, finance, shoot, edit, and refine their passion project, so how did it turn out in the end? The result is a fiery, tactile, unbound response to a world that feels "fucking bizarre"—a world that wants women to "bow and bite your tongues", even as promises on gender equality are broken left, right, and centre; bodily autonomy is wrested away; and stereotypes are exhumed by misogynistic gravediggers. Juri's 'take no shit, only give a shit' performance is complemented by tangible production design and costumes that are pure theatre (the Swiss stands naked behind a plaster cast of her chest that's set alight, for instance). "You'll find ovaries and thorns if you examine a flower," she warns, as a bouquet pokes through her top like some badass botany. It's the fire that matters most, though, and the Nüesch Sisters hope '(Un)Becoming' adds welcome fuel to it.
