Calling My Line

Artificial intelligence claims the assist on Bleu Désert's latest music video—a clip for 'Calling My Line' by Rich the Kid. Thanks to Jean Lanteri and Lucien Beuche's chosen tool(s), the likes of Bruce Willis, Robert de Niro, Michael Jackson, Al Pacino, and Keanu Reeves lip-sync to a track about, er, "popstar bitches on the line" (a sample of Blondie's 'Call Me' is somehow both inspired and incongruous).

If the AI elements make you uncomfortable—hard not to be when the likes of Jackson, Bruce Lee, and David Lynch are 'resurrected' the way they are—then focus on as much as possible on the tactile, telephonic set design or Bleu Désert's VHS camerawork. There's some real craftsmanship on show here, but so is AI's tendency to drain the heart and soul out of cultural touchstones. Not so much a misfire as a misdial.
