Losing our favourite game.
Nicolas Jack Davies directs a thoughtful spot for Parkinson's UK that explores what the disease takes away from a father and daughter. From the moment she was old enough to play, the two have thrown pairs of socks at one another. It's what they’ve always done—even when she's grown up, the daughter's got her eye in. Before she launches her next pair, however, she realises it's no longer a fair 'fight'. First, he struggles with his shirt sleeve, then he's unable to roll up a pair of socks like he showed her all those years ago. He's scared as can be about what’s to come: the more symptoms take hold, the weaker the grip on the life he once had. His daughter's anxious, too, but she does what she can in this moment and rolls up the socks for him. The game's not over—not when the players love and care for each other like these do. Parkinson's treatments have come a long way, says the advertised charity, and only that makes the gorgeous, understated coda possible. If researchers are funded the way Parkinson's UK hopes they are, more habits, rituals, and traditions will be protected.
