The Book of Love
The promo for Olivia Rodrigo's cover of 'The Book of Love' has one of the biggest (and youngest) camera crews in recent memory. That's because dozens of children from Palestine, Yemen, Sudan, and Ukraine were handed small cameras and told to film whatever they pleased. The footage director Billy Boyd Cape and charity War Child got back captures so much more than collateral damage and upheaval. As Rodrigo sings lyrics that have a certain childlike matter-of-factness to them ("The book of love is long and boring/And written very long ago"), each camera boy and camera girl shows us places that, when seen through a child's eyes, can be playgrounds, not battlegrounds; and underneath a bed can be used for hide and seek, not duck and cover. You still grasp the reality of a childhood under fire, but the promo manages to convey hope from some of the most unexpected angles.
