Stupid Song
You can trace a line between Olivia Rodrigo's debut single 'Drivers License' and new track 'Stupid Song'. On the former, she sings, "Today I drove through the suburbs/Cryin' 'cause you weren't around"; on the latter, she's "a car speeding down the boulevard without a brake." Whether she's in the suburbs or the city, Rodrigo uses the automobile to navigate her emotions. It's hard not to get swept up by Rodrigo's impassioned vocals and lovesick imagery ("I'm a heart made of wax and I'm melting in the sun/I'm a thread on your shirt that is coming undone", and the same goes for the music. A ballad becomes a banger at the drop of a hat, with the American too infatuated to play it cool or take it slow. That ties into Tiler Peck's choreography, as she and her fellow New York City Ballet/American Ballet Theatre dancers swap pirouettes and pliés for wilder, uninhibited moves. The streets and parks of New York become a stage for Rodrigo and company, but let's face it—unless you have an allergy, everybody wants to be in the corner shop with the cats, right?
