The Block/Mouse Parade
As album titles go, 'All Is Love and Pain in the Mouse Parade' is a doozy. The fourth studio album by Of Monsters and Men, it offers director and animator Honor Price plenty to chew on. The result is a stop-motion music video that delivers two songs for the price of one—'The Block' and 'Mouse Parade'—and what a world Price and her team have crafted for them. Through a blend of stop-motion animation, puppetry, and use of a multiplane camera, Price presents an alternate reality where mice but not as we know them live. One of the strange creatures is kept in a wheel by its owner (a human-sized mouse, no less), only to escape and go where few pets have gone before. Its peculiar gait and storybook physicality make it easy to tag along. As 'The Block' morphs into 'Mouse Parade' like an Icelandic spell's been cast by Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir, Ragnar Þórhallsson, Brynjar Leifsson, Kristján Páll Kristjánsson, and Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson, Price then shows where these creatures come from: a city beneath the floorboards that needs brave citizens to explore the world above. It's a full circle moment that makes you think about cruelty, isolation, and community in an unexpected way.
