Running To Pain

Kelsey Lu and Garance Marillier ('Raw', 'Titane') have a chunk of Lanzarote all to themselves in the promo for 'Running To Pain', Lu's first single in four years. It was worth the wait—Lu, who uses they/them pronouns, continues to refine their chamber pop sound while also questioning if they're on the right track in life ("Runnin' to pain, is it the only way to tame/The demons inside that haunt my mind?")

This leads them, Marillier, and director Savanah Leaf to the Canary Island, far from the likes of Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen. Once Marillier has circled Lu on all fours like a wild animal, the two are ready to explore the otherworldly landscape as one. As the lyrics suggests, however, this relationship is a double-edge sword—one that might well have been forged in a nearby volcano.

Marillier's first outburst comes out of nowhere, with her in the background and a paralysed Lu in the foreground. The bedroom's then contrasted with a mountain slope, where tensions boil over in a cloud of dust. You sense Marillier and Lu are trapped in a vicious, devoted cycle, and the well-judged final shot only strengthens that suspicion.
