A Love Supreme, Part I – Acknowledgement
John Coltrane died in 1967 at the age of forty. Needless to say, the world was robbed of more albums like 'Blue Train', 'Africa/Brass', and 'A Love Supreme'. The latter turned sixty last year, so director AG Rojas has made a different kind of promo to mark the occasion. To the honeyed strains of 'Acknowledgment', Rojas's camera roves around the New Jersey studio where the magic happened. Shot in crisp black-and-white to match 'A Love Supreme''s cover, the film has no cast to speak of—instead, Rojas makes Van Gelder Studio a character in its own right: wise, sturdy, and a good listener. As the track draws to a close, however, the promo takes a turn for the spectral, with Van Gelder Studio replaced with a smoky void lit up by the song's only lyrics: "A love supreme." The album's made up of four parts ('Acknowledgement', 'Resolution', 'Pursuance', and 'Psalm')—let's wait and see if Rojas takes a stab at the other three. If not, he's delivered a consummate studio tour at least.
