Aperture
There are hints of 'Weapon of Choice' and 'Birds of a Feather' to the promo for Harry Styles's comeback song, 'Aperture'. Heck, why not add a bit of 'Eagle!' from 'Scrubs' into the mix? The result is a funky cocktail put together by director Aube Perrie, DP Christopher Ripley, and choreographer Ryan Heffington, who ensure the years-long wait was worth it for fans. The former One Direction man (he now goes in many, many directions) is pursued by an incorrigible stranger in a Los Angeles hotel. Styles does what any pop star with half a brain would do and legs it, only to get tackled down the stairs. Whether he's into it, concussed, or because Stockholm syndrome's kicked in ahead of schedule, the singer-songwriter gets manhandled by the stranger who's part dancer, part wrestler. Not only does the promo catch viewers off-guard, but so does the track. It's as if Styles has moved out of the poppy 'Harry's House' and shacked up in Hotel Electronica, where synthetic forms and augmented vocals populate every floor. What's crucial is that it still sounds so human, hopeful, and—you guessed it—Harry ("We belong together/It finally appears it's only love").
