Storm (ft. Yung Lean)

The Department for Education's new spot is a whole lot different from what's come before. Pupils smoke crack, fight each other, tear a mobile phone mast apart, and treat the school like it belongs to them. On top of that, they—wait, this isn't a recruitment ad, it's Gener8ion's latest music video. We did wonder how this was meant to get prospective teachers on board.

As if anyone could tame the student played by Swedish rapper and guest vocalist Yung Lean, who's the closest we've ever come to a live-action Jimmy Hopkins, the protagonist of Rockstar Games's deceptively charming 'Bully'. He puts in a great performance as the alpha male in school uniform, able to use fear and respect to keep the class of 2034 under his control. What a reassuring glimpse into the future, eh?

The future looks brighter for director Romain Gavras, who makes his characters hard to like but also impossible to look away from. As proficient Gavras is when it comes to acts of school-age savagery and teenage rebellion, it's the crowd shots bookending the promo that steal the show: one illustrates how in thrall the cast are to Lean, while the other is what happens when the photographer has no control over the class.
