L3 to sprint.

This Coinbase ad reminds DAVID of a Toyota spot from 2012' about a CG character who escapes to the human world. He used a GT86 to get real, so to speak—the man in director Oscar Hudson's nifty commercial-slash-open-world game must do it on foot, lest he get trampled by obnoxious NPCs forever.

Inspired by the look and feel of 'Grand Theft Auto' throughout the years, the ad revolves around a guy with no main character energy whatsoever. Not only do burly bankers bump into him so hard that money falls out of his pockets ("Thanks for the change!"), but he's also forced to stand in the longest line possible at 'Trusted Institution'. Suffice to say, the game is broken.

He wants out and who could blame him? Before he mounts the great escape, however, viewers have time to soak up the TLC that's gone into this world. Whether it's the mission marker, the low-res foliage, or the protag's early-3D hands, the visuals are pure nostalgia bait... but they also illustrate how behind the times Coinbase thinks traditional banks are.

The transition from polygons to real life is a cathartic blur as the protagonist legs it to freedom. Whether he's able to level up through cryptocurrency remains to be seen, but the brand insists the current financial system's played out.
