Oedipal complexities.
Of the four TVCs for Claude which ran during the Super Bowl, this is perhaps the funniest. A young man is in therapy to talk about his relationship with his mother when the counsellor, representing a chatbot provided by Claude's best known rival, suddenly moves into advertising mode and channels the idea that he has altogether different mummy issues. As in the other executions, director Jeff Low uses slightly delayed responses to indicate what is going on, and suggests the conversation is going well right up until the moment when advertising comes into the picture to shift the dynamic. As stated before, the implicit criticism of Open AI's ChatGPT by Anthropic - the company that provides Claude - represents an important commitment by the latter that they will never allow their chatbot to become a vehicle for advertising, and given the economics of AI, that may prove a hard commitment to maintain. But, as we are in the phase of this technology where several companies are duking it out for dominance, this could nonetheless prove to be a very shrewd move, as it is very persuasive.
