Christel House

"From Classrooms to Life"

Saving the world, one child at a time.

A film like this one for Christel House sets out to raise awareness of the institution at its centre and if, like DAVID, it is an institution of which you were previously ignorant, that aim is incredibly important. As they say, you only get to make a first impression once so you better make it count, and under the stewardship of EP Andrew Porteous - who has a personal connection to Christel House - director Paul Burger has wrung every drop of emotional potential from the opportunity to introduce people to this charitable endeavour.

Christel House has been quietly providing life-changing opportunities for children caught by a poverty trap since its foundation in 1998. It is time to make a little noise about it, and this introductory doc does exactly that, but it does it in a fashion which seems entirely in keeping with the humility displayed by those who work there. Their emotional investment in the institution they run is palpable, and will have you wiping away a tear or two away as you watch.

Andrew Porteous's mother opened the Christel House in Jamaica so he knows at first hand the value of what they do, and the commitment needed by those who support it - something which is captured so beautifully by this film.

At a time when poverty-stricken communities have become objects of derision from both the most powerful man in the world and its richest, our willingness to display respect and love towards its most innocent inhabitants has never been more important, and this film does exactly that.
