As if it isn't obvious from the title, Charli xcx is exploring a new genre with her latest track, 'Rock Music'. The promo by Aidan Zamiri of Object & Animal playfully pokes fun at the tropes of rock 'n' roll and adds to the sense of fun invoked by the song. The artist herself is at the centre of the mischief, smoking like a bad girl and provoking moments of mayhem. The hedonism is suffused with elements of self-destruction and this is unquestionably the subtext of both the song and its accompanying video.

Aficionados may feel that Charli xcx's devotion to Auto-Tune dilutes her commitment to the rawness of the genre, but, in reality, it enables her to inhabit the genre on her own terms. In this respect, Zamiri once again has her back, using the promo to reflect Charli xcx's ownership of this take on the isolating nature of this form of musical energy, bound as it is to the excesses associated with rock 'n' roll.
