Mum's the word.
Last year, DAVID covered a grand documentary about Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade and coach Francisco 'Xico' Porath. Adidas and directors David Terry Fine and Stanley Brock's timely follow-up focuses on American alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin and mum Eileen, who—much like Porath before her—deserves her moment in the spotlight. Released to mark Mikaela's fourth Winter Olympics, it's a study of grief and glory that's as much about what happens off the slopes as on them. When Jeff Shiffrin (Eileen's husband and Mikaela's father) dies in 2020, it casts an almost inescapable shadow over the would-be GOAT's career. Pensive behind-the-scenes footage shows how mother and daughter work, play, and think through the pain. Both have changed as a result, but not beyond recognition (the warmth Mikaela and Eileen have fought to maintain is tangible). By the time Brock and Fine's consummate film draws to a close, you feel like the Shiffrins are ready to go downhill in a good way... and where better to do that than at the Winter Olympics?
