If you can't find the gift, find the words.

The much talked about John Lewis Christmas ad concerns itself with the difficulty of communicating across a generational divide, and although this film for Vodafone adopts a very different approach, it is just as effective at drawing attention to this increasing problem, and deserves to be seen as another important contribution to improving strained familial relationships.

Director David Stoddart trains his camera on a park bench which has a helpline sat alongside, and allows us to witness phone conversations between troubled parents trying to understand the concerns of their offspring.

The advice is being provided by young people, and they display both an understanding of the children being discussed, and a wisdom about the relationships they are learning about. The calibration is perfectly judged as the youngsters are neither precocious nor flippant with their counsel, and this enables genuine insights to emerge.

The end sequence where the parents receive reassurance about their parenting is really nicely weighted and offers a helpful reminder that everyone in this equation is in need of loving support.
