Don't Let Me Go
DAVID thought Tom Odell's 'Don’t Let Me Go' was an Olly Murs cover. Then he remembered Murs's song was called 'Please Don't Let Me Go'. What a polite young man, eh? Odell just says, "Don't let me go" and that's that. The man's either rude as hell or just knows what he wants—in any case, the song sums up how most people feel right now: "Turn off the TV, I'm tired". Like many Odell tracks, 'Don’t Let Me Go' has a soporific quality that's great if you like that kind of thing. DAVID thought he’d need a double espresso at one point, but Odell and his band do find another gear as he reaches peak yearn. It may not be top gear, per se, but it's something. What life the song does have is amplified by director Alex Leggatt's promo: a pensive, studio-based effort that blends 35mm and 16mm photography. There are hints of the city throughout, but Leggatt and DP Kai Blamey Nguyen are at pains to reflect Odell's inner world.
