The Scythe
Director Fiona Jane Burgess depicts a rod trip with a difference in this poignant promo for The Last Dinner Party. The protagonists - perfectly cast by Tamsyn Manson - are well into life's third act, but Burgess doesn't allow a flicker of condescension into her film. Instead, she has them enact the exact same series of moves as she would have done if they had been in their twenties, and it proves very astute. The antiquity of the duo is emphasised by the decision to shoot it in monochrome... a look that adds to the sentimentality without overdoing it. The inclusion of small loving gestures - the finger tracing across the palm, the way they look at one another all serves to confound the idea that love belongs only to the young, and makes for a great promo, albeit one that doesn't innately connect to the music it sits alongside.
