Squarespace

"Tradies"

The job lot.

This Squarespace commercial is Nineties as hell and all the better for it. Scored by 'Click Go the Shears', a dyed-in-the-wool folk song from down under, it celebrates the tradesmen and women who keep modern-day Australia and New Zealand in good nick. Director Zach Tavel's spot goes back in time, however, with a look and tone that screams analogue television.

Soft focus, cheesy smiles, thumbs-up to camera, an inexplicable walk in a field… how about a toll-free telephone number for good luck? OK, scratch that one—this is a spot for a website builder after all. If the goal was to blend old-school graft and optimism with newfangled technology, then the brand should be happy as a carpenter with a drill in his hand. The abrupt 'retune' at the end is a lovely touch.
