"Our Wayne"

30 January 2025

3 mins 44s

Oh brother, where art thou?

This short but fascinating study of fraternal discord was made by Craig Bingham and focuses on his brother Wayne from whom the director felt, at one point in his life, to be permanently estranged. In just over three minutes, Bingham provides an insight into their fragile rapprochement, punctuated by the glorious landscapes of the Yorkshire countryside where they grew up, and Wayne still resides.

The director is heard but not seen, while the documentary's subject is glimpsed initially in fragments before fully occupying the frame. This serves as a metaphor for the director's inability to 'see' Wayne fully until the latter's disarming candour about his own limitations poignantly helps the director, as well as the viewer, to understand why he has spent a lot of his life feeling alienated from other people, and why that has often manifested itself through confrontation.

It is an arresting short film demonstrating that this director has an uncanny ability to get to the heart of a story with great economy... a prized asset in the world of advertising.
