A look inside.

There was a time, not that long ago, when it would have been inconceivable to talk about mental health as the main reason why we need to offer support to those who were once in the armed forces. But, for the second year running, the Royal British Legion has emphasised exactly this, and with the help of directors Zhang + Knight, they've landed the message with acute sensitivity.

There is conferred intimacy from the way we see the depictions of breakdown and stress, as images of war are projected on to the outside walls of residences, and we see those suffering from the memory of what they've been through inside. In the wrong hands, these glimpses might seem voyeuristic but Zhang + Knight's execution avoids this, thanks in part to the excellent voiceover provided by Martin Freeman, which invokes compassion from the audience.

At a time when the British flag (and England's St George's cross) have once again been hijacked by the far right, patriotism can seem jingoistic, and it is very wise to lean into this reasoning for buying a poppy, and thereby supporting the work of the Royal British Legion.
