"Money Phone"

The end is nigh.

This O2 commercial from directors Dorian & Daniel kicks off with a puppet show we'd like to see more of in future. Barney asks his 'friend' Ed for help with a new phone and gets the offer of a lifetime: "If you sign this contract, the phone is almost for free." The audience goes wild, but we suspect poor Barney's been taken for a ride.

That goes for everyone else in the film, as it happens. Smartphones are rendered as wads of cash to reflect how unscrupulous vendors extract as much money out of customers as possible. Some stacks are bigger than others, but they all represent a lack of cost transparency that drives consumers to despair.

It's why O2 has stepped in with 'Pay Stop', a scheme that halts rates as soon as a phone is paid off. There’s hope on the streets as a result, but not for Barney. When he asks Ed what happens if he forgets to cancel his contract, the beast laughs his hairy head off. Who else wants to hug Barney right now?
