National Prison Radio

Someone still loves you.
Let's get it out the way nice and early: National Prison Radio has a captive audience. Now the Christmas cracker jokes are out of the way, let's focus on what writer and director Craig Bingham has made for the brand: a well shot, low-key reminder of radio's power to connect, as family and friends use the airwaves to maintain some form of normality. Take Tracey, for example—she's behind bars on her birthday, but her father, Trevor, knows what to do. As he tends to the garden and his pigeons—a lovely nod to a bygone mode of communication—he listens for the birthday message he sent. Tracey hears it, but so do tens of thousands of other prisoners. More people than you might think benefit from a gesture like that. Viewers are free to speculate about why Tracey's in jail if they wish, but why bother? The point is that, in a place where liberty's at an absolute premium, she's free to listen, at least.
