Beth's Farm
Jerskin Fendrix, who composed the original music for Yorgos Lanthimos's masterpiece 'Poor Things' is the farmer in this fantastical promo directed by Lanthimos and featuring Emma Stone. It is a wondrous thing, brimming with intrigue and originality... it takes viewers on a sci-fi journey that's quite unexpected after its bucolic beginning, and the story is so compelling that you just want to know more. What must it be like to have a mind like Lanthimos's? To see the world through such a magnificently skewered perspective? We are enriched by his willingness to being his askance visions to life, and by his ability to provide them with an undercurrent of dark humour. A piece of work like this also demonstrates that it's possible to raise important issues without raising them at all. Is this film about humankind's bad faith relationship with the natural world? Almost certainly, but it's so implicit as to be ghostly, and you find yourself contemplating our selfishly destructive ways without quite knowing why. This invasion of our subconscious is so much more powerful than any amount of earnest preaching, and is a perfect illustration of the true power of art.
