I Choose Freedom

"Lifting the Mask"

27 October 2025

90s

The call is coming from inside the house.

The tropes of horror movies are used to great effect in this campaigning film for charity I Choose Freedom. Director Anne-Sofie Lindgaard nails the existential terror as a woman tries to ignore the sounds of what appears to be a home invasion. The seriousness of the issue to which attention has been drawn means that this film has to walk a razor's edge to successfully land its message... if the dial was turned ever so slightly in the wrong direction, this could easily feel like a flippant appeal, but Lindgaard has assuredly ensured that the audience will understand its gravity.

For a director in the early stages of her advertising career, Lindgaard is clearly someone to be reckoned with. This film is an exhibition of confidence, as it builds tension towards its reveal at a perfect pace. The clever thing about this film is that it doesn't just subvert the horror genre, it subverts comic subversions of the horror trope. You kind of expect a joke at the end, so discovering that it is more serious than a horror film, hits hard.
