Tea and empathy.
This beautifully observed study for a bid by the Department of Health and Social Care to find more people to become carers will act as an immensely helpful filter, because some of the audience will - while finding it sweet - be unable to picture themselves as the deeply caring people we see doing their jobs. But those who can see themselves carrying out these vital roles may well find their hearts swelling in their chests as they see all the good that's being achieved, and immediately consider the possibility of joining their ranks. Director Tom Tagholm has brought the eye of a skilled documentarian to the project and created an assembly of candid moments which aggregate into a recruitment clarion call. It subtly builds as you watch its sixty seconds unfold, with Blur's 'Good Song' providing an exquisite musical accompaniment which plays its part in the rising wave. DAVID's favourite moment feels like one of those that is only caught if a director is fully engaged. It's at the front door when the highly tentative young man earlier seen cutting an onion for the first time in his life, is asked by a carer: "would you like me to come with you?" and you he hesitates before replying "could you?". It's just three seconds long but it perfectly captures the level of empathy needed to carry out this role. The solipsistic need not apply.
