"Intervention"

8 September 2025

40s

The first Christmas.

How good is this Argos ad? That's a rhetorical question but, for the avoidance of doubt, it's damn near perfect. A fantastic script from T&P has been brilliantly executed by Tim McNaughton to convey an advertising message that will land with the public and realign their perception of a brand in a fashion that will increase sales.

Did the client get nervous about seeing their brand's icons behaving like a pair of gangsters? If they did, they admirably ran with it anyway, and the resulting film is both funny and edgy.

The film tackles the idea that Argos only sells toys. In some respects, the strength of the retailer's Christmas offerings for children is a source of strength, but if consumers think that that's all they do then it obviously starts to count against them. This film provides a reminder that they sell a full range of stuff, and it's a timely message as thoughts begin to turn towards the annual orgy of gift giving that is only a few months away.

Is this a Christmas ad then? Kind of.... is it the best Christmas ad of 2025? So far, it obviously is. Will it still be by the end of the Christmas ads season? Quite possibly.
