"Bring a Book to Life"

Take yourself to a different world.
This can be seen back to front, but most viewers are likely to understand that this ad for Amazon demonstrates how opening a book brings to life the scenario described by its words — rather than seeing the events as a distraction from the book itself, which is certainly another potential interpretation. Readers already know that one of the beauties of books is the way they can take you out of your current circumstances and deliver you to a different world, and this is a spectacular illustration of that. Director Steve Rogers provides a powerful reminder of literature's ability to fire the imagination. Each of the depicted scenes contains an otherworldly drama, demonstrating how words on a page can trigger an out-of-body experience. This was clearly an ambitious and elaborate project — and that's just as well, as this idea wouldn't land without such scale and grandeur. Now that Amazon has become a retailer of everything, it's easy to forget that books is where it all began — and it's nostalgic to see them return to their roots. The campaign is not dissimilar to the ongoing work for Amazon's sister company Audible, which also lays claim to the idea that reading can remove us from our everyday existence. (Not that anyone should take that as a slight — we know how sensitive the industry is about ads that resemble other ads — but we're not interested in the storm so often found in that particular teacup.
