"Moments That Never Happen"

5 September 2024

3 mins 45s

Different paths.

In this stirring short film for Volvo, the brand’s tagline ‘for life’ really comes into its own. It opens with a couple finding out they’re pregnant, and the husband calling his mother to share the news. This touchingly vulnerable conversation becomes the film’s narration, as he outlines his fears, his hopes for his child, and his sureness that they’ll have a daughter.

The voiceover is accompanied by stylistically day-dreamy scenes of the family’s future and a little girl growing up, cut with moments of the present as his wife goes out to pick up celebratory takeaways. Also cut in, are cinematic shots of another woman driving her Volvo EX90, who becomes dangerously distracted while driving.

After the super reads ‘sometimes the moments that never happen matter the most’, the outcome of this sliding doors moment, and whether the family’s projected life was real or imagined, is revealed. It turns out, the superior safety design of the car has ensured the family’s future together. And as this isn’t director Marcus Ibañez’s first piece of emotionally-laden branded storytelling for the car company, it’s likely there’s more collaborations in their future too.
