"The Remote"

9 January 2024

60s

Family affray.

It's every family member for themselves in this 60" slobberknocker for Vodafone. People say that blood is thicker than water, but family ties are always stretched to the limit when the remote control is up for grabs. Director Tom Green shows what would happen when the fight straddles genres like a channel-hopper.

What starts as a Prohibition gangster movie with Tommy guns morphs into an historical epic with swords and shields. As the costumes change, so does the remote control—note how an illicit brown package transforms into a sceptre worthy of a Norse king or queen.

The film then makes a sharp turn into neo-noir action territory, where the family continue to fight over the MacGuffin (now a steel briefcase that would make a bomb disposal expert sweat). If this is what Vodafone's new TV Play platform does to families, expect many more to be charged with family affray.
