"Together is for Christmas"

10 November 2024

90s

A Christmas miracle

This charming, madcap tale appears to be set in an era of Australia's past which is both antique and modern, as the styling is from the first half of the 20th century, and yet mobile phones are at the centre of the story. It's a weird juxtaposition, but it works, largely because we're wrapped up in the emotionality of the lost donkey.

Director Steve Rogers is spinning a lot of plates to make this work as a dramatic tale of Christmas reunion at the same time as landing all of its silly jokes, but he pulls it off and sustains a poignancy throughout that makes you feel awful glad when the phone-swallowing animal is reunited with his owner at the end, potentially having surrendered his role as a chart-topping swooner.
