New York City Ballet

"Concerto for Two Pianos"

25 January 2024

90s

Duelling pianos.

Ballet, as it turns out, does not involve a bear wearing a fez in a little car. It's more about danse d'école, pliés, battements, and the like. Director Ezra Hurwitz knows this better than most, as he performed for both the Miami City Ballet and the New York City Ballet.

He's back at the former to promote 'Concerto for Two Pianos', a new work by principal dancer Tiler Peck. Rehearsals are well underway, with Hurwitz and co-director Max Bartick eager to capture the artistry, the physicality, and the technique involved.

The result is a breathless preview scored by two pianists who almost set fire to their keys. Hurwitz and Bartick's camerawork is just as dynamic, alert to spins, lifts, and steps that look almost supernatural. Yet the main takeaway from this spot is the human element that makes ballet so electrifying.
