Disease
Perhaps Halloween’s been extended this year and the US election results are one giant trick. Wishful thinking or not, Lady Gaga’s new promo, directed by Tanu Muiño, is a certified twisted treat. It’s classic Gaga in that she throws her all into it (including her demons), and it’s classic Muiño in being a high concept music video with a fashion editorial feel. The treatment could well have read: a classic horror movie-inspired take on the saying ‘wherever you go, there you are’. The promo sees the singer trying to escape from various forms of herself intent on hurting her, as choreographer Parris Goebel’s trademark powerfully sharp movement style amplifies the drama of the visuals. It’s a masterful portrayal of the track’s lyrics such as “poison on the inside” and “plagued with all your memories, you reach out and no one's there”, which the singer has noted is about accepting she’ll never be able to outrun the parts of herself that scare her. We all have our own personal brand of madness, and when talented people combine theirs, we get brilliance like this.
