Angel of My Dreams
Talk about saving the best till last. After Leigh-Anne Pinnock released her debut solo album and Perrie Edwards dropped two solo tracks, Jade Thirlwall becomes the final member of Little Mix to strike out on her own. 'Angel of My Dreams' is the result, and what a tour de force it is. The first few seconds lull you into a false sense of security. A safe as houses in the middle of the road ballad, you say? Wait until the beat kicks in and tells the synths to follow suit. Now we have a track that takes no shit and moves like an electro-pop tiger. And you had better believe this cat has claws. Lyrics like "You only care about money/Sellin' my soul to a psycho" and "If I don't win, I'm in the bin" point to Simon Cowell and Syco Music, Little Mix's former record label. Songs about the perils of fame are ten-a-penny, but Thirlwall adds spice to the X-Factor inquiry with pinpoint accuracy. She's helped no end by promo director Aube Perrie, who delivers a film that is part biographical, part hyperrealistic, and all part of a shared universe. Fontaines DC fans may recognise the dance studio frequented by Grian Chatten in the promo for 'Starbuster' (also directed by Perrie), but make no mistake: Thirlwall is the chameleonic star of the show.
