Holy, Holy
As debut solo songs go, 'Holy, Holy' by Geordie Greep is a doozy. The Black Midi frontman is a consummate storyteller, and what a yarn he spins here. He assumes the role of womaniser extraordinaire, the kind of guy who says: "From the moment you put your hand on my knee/I knew I'd have you with ease." He dares you to throw a drink in his face or kick him in the bollocks with lyrics like "The barmaids know my name, I've had them all before/You are new, I'll have you too" and "I want you to be dressed like a sophisticated tart". Just when you thought this demented jazz-punk show tune was about to call it a night, Greep lets us in on a secret: money, not salsa, makes the world go round. He must pay to look like a big shot, and the specifics of his fantasy are an absolute riot ("Walk to the bathroom, I'll follow after/Don't worry, we won't do anything, we'll just loiter there fifteen minutes or so"). It's a James Bond theme where 007 fires blanks, so to speak. Does that mean all the strikes Greep throws in the music video are fake as well? Maybe, maybe not—all that matters is CJ's Bowling in Hockley gets some publicity. The world would be a better place if more people acted like Walter Sobchak and said: "Fuck it, let's go bowling."
