The thrill of taking part.

This film made to promote the Esports World Cup earlier this year depicts a quartet of competitors preparing for the big event. A mixture of gameplay, and scenes from the lives of the esportspeople gives us a real insight into the hard work that goes into becoming a gamer at the highest level, while acknowledging that not everyone would equate it with the trials and tribulations faced by actual Olympians.

This tongue-in-cheek tone, which in no way makes fun of gamers, lands the point perfectly, and director Rick Darge provides us with four excellent portraits as well as an epic depiction of gaming itself, landing every punch available. This must have been cathartic for gamers to watch, as it successfully examines many of the tropes associated with esports from both the inside and the outside, and ultimately brings the two together as those who initially mock are shown to be behind these competitors.
