Andrew MacGregor
Yard Act

"The Trench Coat Museum"

11 August 2023

8 mins 24s

The Trench Coat Museum

'The Trench Coat Museum' by Leeds rockers Yard Act clocks in at eight minutes, eleven seconds and still leaves you wanting more. It's a slinky, sinewy, sartorial monster of a track, as frontman James Smith lays bare his newfound obsession with a wardrobe staple.

"I wear it when I'm headed off to war," he croons, fascinated by the way it swishes and swings. Sure, it gets caught in the car door every so often, but it's also water-resistant and heatproof. So why was it "banned for a bit", as Smith puts it?

He refers to misguided schools that banned trench coats after fatal shootings, when "twisted minds" concealed weapons through fashion. Why blame the mass availability of pistols, shotguns, and assault rifles when you can blame fabric, eh?

Political, social, and tailored satire also permeates James Slater's rangy promo, as a woman tours the eponymous musuem and dances with the exhibits. One of the models is Smith himself, cut down to size by the self-guided audio tour ("Despite their swift ascent in the music world, Yard Act were rightly dismissed as a flash in the pan bunch of sellouts").
