Poignant Parenting

Co-parenting after a spit is a tricky reality for many families across the UK, with adults doing their best to maintain a positive relationship for the sake of their offspring. One such situation is explored in this nuanced ad for Tesco, which offers a subtle, more layered take on the brand's 'Food Love Stories' campaign.

The narrative is well acted and unspools in unhurried fashion, as the child asks if the family can have a barbecue together rather than simply hand off custody. The parents' hesitation is obvious, but they push through the awkwardness to make their daughter happy.

A particularly affecting sequence comes when the child is reminiscing about the past, flashing back to scenes of domestic togetherness before the adults' break-up occurred. Her request that they return to those nostalgic days is bittersweet, and will touch the hearts of all parents who know that no amount of well-meaning summer treats will heal a fractured marriage.
