Dog days of summer.
Everything and nothing happens in this balmy short film courtesy of Irene Baqué. Inspired by her own childhood holidays in the Catalan countryside and films like 'Call Me by Your Name' and 'Aftersun', 'Can Carreras' depicts a lazy morning, noon, night in rural 1990s Spain, without smart devices or a care in the world. The atmosphere reminds DAVID of an Arctic Monkeys lyric: "But it ain't a holiday until/You go to fetch something from the car." No need to wait for the rain to stop like you do back home—just take a stroll to and fro. Here, 'action' constitutes a drag of a cigarette or dough slammed on a worktop. Some, as a result, may want to check out early. But that just leaves more for everyone else to enjoy, like the well-considered production design, the easy-breezy score, and the ways each cast member keeps it positively mañana.
