Saturday Night Live

"Mario Kart"

1 March 2023

2 mins 57s

Shroom vroom.

Poor Chris Pratt. Just weeks before he makes his debut as Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Saturday Night Live present their own version of Nintendo's mascot: a grizzled, world-weary shell of a plumber that looks and sounds a lot like Pedro Pascal. To the surprise of absolutely no one, he nails the role.

In a mash-up of 'Mario Kart' and HBO's adaptation of 'The Last of Us', his Mario has seen too much in a world ravaged by Goombas, Bullet Bills, and—worst of all—Bowser (Kenan Thompson). A shot at redemption comes when he's asked to escort Princess Peach (Chloe Fineman) to Rainbow Road.

Whether it's a shotgun-toting Luigi, a bisexual Toad, or Mario's mushroom addiction ("It makes me feel big, OK!?"), director Mike Diva squeezes every ounce from Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day's irreverent script. The death of one character may be too much for some fragile viewers to handle.
