Make My Money Matter

"The Hidden Relationship"

18 April 2023

2 mins 03s

Cryptic Couple

A fraught couple's counselling session takes an unexpected turn in this excellent film for Make My Money Matter. The lobby group use the pair to personify British banks and their unhealthy relationship with gas and oil - the expansion of which they continue to finance despite knowing what a bad look it is in public.

Kit Harington and Rose Leslie are well cast as the fighting couple, unquestionably helped by their real life marriage. It lends a natural air to their performances, particularly since the twist as to which roles they're playing isn't revealed until the very end. It sparks a laugh, but a bitter one. It can't have been straightforward for director Ben Strebel to navigate the actual relationship between his co-stars at the same time as maximising the dark comedy, but his pulled it off with aplomb and lands the punchline with exquisite timing.

It's a timely reminder that, despite many businesses focusing what seems to be their entire advertising lens on their green credentials, there's always the possibility of something sinister happening beneath the greenwashing. Customers are urged to research the facts for themselves, and choose the lesser evil when it comes to banking options which harm the planet.
