Greenpeace

"Don't Stop"

16 June 2023

7 mins 23s

Last Call

This striking film from Greenpeace offers a disturbing look at those who continue to party while the world burns. Despite it being abundantly clear that the planet is in deep trouble due to the effects of climate change - with natural disasters and extreme weather at all time, deadly highs - oil companies continue to make similarly record-breaking profits.

The satire is cleverly handled here, as a swanky party descends into increasing grotesqueness. Directed by Steve McQueen protégé Samona Olanipekun, it quickly establishes a divide between guests and servers - with things heating up as a frantic kitchen struggles to keep up with the partygoers' demands.

Debauchery thrives in nightmarish fashion as the film goes on, with guests smearing themselves with food, smashing down drinks, and steadily turning into real-life fairy-tale monsters. It all takes place over a reworking of Fleetwood Mac's 'Don't Stop', which puts an ominous twist on the old school rock classic.

There are some truly standout visual snapshots which nail the film's message peppered throughout the piece, including one of a young man tinkering with intricate gourmet plating while a fire roars behind him. It's a forthright and visually arresting reminder that the party for polluters should have ended a long time ago, and the people in power need to do more than fiddle with their image to fix it.
