Love for Life
Promises made as young people in the first flush of love are put to the ultimate test in this poignant film from the Alzheimer's Society. What begins as a minor moment of forgetfulness soon becomes more serious, as the simple action of making a cup of tea becomes a flashpoint in a couple's relationship. Director James Rouse draws great performances from his cast, ensuring that what could feel like a kitchen sink drama is instead a delicately rendered and terribly tender tale of love and endurance. Despite the almost unbearable difficulty of caring for a loved one who no longer knows you, the wife remains determined to take 'in sickness and in health' seriously. It's a message which continues to grow in relevancy, as an ageing population and total lack of funding in the care system means that more people are becoming familiar with caring for a loved one with dementia. Support from the advertised charity is shown as a bright spot in an otherwise very dark time, and reminds us that carers also need someone to lean on.
